Perpetual Night by Georgina Morales

Life at fifteen is complicated with hormones and belligerence but what if you throw in the mix nightmares that torment you even when awake? What if everything you hold dear threatened to slip through your fingers? PERPETUAL NIGHT follows Lilibeth Royster’s search for the truth in a world where the here and the beyond get tangled; where every clue opens new horrors; where uncovering her secret might threaten more than her sanity, her life.

The Emerald City by J A Beard

When her parents die, teenager Gail Dorjee retreats into an angry, sarcastic shell. She hopes it will ease her pain, but all it gets her is a one-way trip from Kansas to a Seattle boarding school, the elite Osland Academy.

As soon as she arrives, Gail clashes with Diana, the leader of the school’s most powerful clique. The Winged make Gail’s life hell until she find allies: her airhead roommate; a cowardly fellow victim of the Winged; and, bit by bit, Diana’s boyfriend–the seemingly heartless Nick.

But Gail soon has bigger problems than Diana. One of her teachers hates her. Glasses shatter and fountains erupt around her. She can’t swear no matter how hard she tries. An unseen force is keeping her on campus. Worst of all, she uncovers a plot that will give one person a precious gift at the cost of thousands of lives. Now Gail and her friends must stop the plot–not just to save lives, but to win a brain, the nerve, a heart and a home.

About the Author:

J.A. Beard likes to describe himself as a restless soul married to an equally restless soul. His two children are too young yet to discuss whether or not they are restless souls, but he’s betting on it. He likes to call himself the Pie Master, yet is too cowardly to prove his skills in an actual baking competition. So, really, he’s merely a Potential Pie Master.

While writing is one of his great passions, science is another, and when he’s not writing or worrying about baking, he’s working on the completion of his PhD in microbiology.

Zed by Stephen Herfst

The story revolves around a teenage girl’s promises to save Zed from the human hordes.

Zed is not your typical zombie. He is cursed with the affliction of thought … although he tries to make the best of a bad situation. The goals for his unrest are simple: to improve his stride, to taste a lightly-seared pork loin once again and avoid Activists at all costs.

His life was predictable, controlled and good until chaos crashed the party. In just one day his world is destroyed and his ability to survive is tested. Would he be able to get through this in one piece? And would he somehow be able to survive the unstoppable force that goes by the name of Chase?

Author Interview

Where do you find your inspiration?

The inspiration came to me while I was watching The Walking Dead. I was bored at the drama and the angst that unfolded so much so that I wanted something else – and then it hit me. I wondered what it would be like to write a zombie story from the perspective of a zombie. This snowballed into the basis of a story that would be humorous, touching and inspirational; not things that you usually associate with the average zombie story! I then spent the next month writing the story, followed by over two months editing and polishing.

What is your favourite aspect of Zed?

My favourite aspect was the interaction between Zed and Chase. It was interesting for me to see the way they interacted and to play their strengths and weaknesses against each other. I also enjoyed twisting the traditional horror aspects around so that normally mundane situations had a horror element from Zed’s perspective.

Who is your favourite character from Zed and why?

My favourite character is Zed, as he reflects a lot of the thoughts and musings that course through my mind. He served as a vehicle for pointing out the hypocrisies and contradictions of society. He also amused me most of the time, although my sense of humour is an acquired taste.

What are you working on now?

I am working on another novel which is not zombie-related. It’s about a manic-obsessive who is forced into a situation that is very much outside of his comfort zone. I am taking a more structured development process to building the story and characters, so I will see whether that pans out when I finally begin writing it. My first novel took just over a month to write, although I think if I get the planning done well, this one might even be quicker. I have established the story arc for the two remaining books in the Zed Trilogy, although I want to stagger the release.

What do you love about most about writing?

I think the thing I love most is being able to contribute to the literary world. I have read a good number of books in my time (I would estimate at least a thousand), and so, contributing my voice to the world is exciting and humbling. Hopefully others will gain enjoyment from the stories that I enjoy writing and reading.

About the Author

If I had to define myself in a few words, it would be:

“Quiet, outgoing, thinking, reflective, driven, lazy, observant, competitive, confident, doubtful”

Depending on my mood, the topic and the people around me, I can be many things. When I began life I wanted to be a programmer but now I just want to be independent. I am always open to trying new things and have always made it a habit of doing things I haven’t done before.

I was born in Germany, from Dutch-South African descent and currently live in Australia although I’m currently working in Philadelphia and my family lives in Malaysia. I don’t believe that I can define one country as my home and hope to travel for the rest of my life.

The Cimaruta by Lady Ellen

Persephane Pendrake Chronicles – Book One: The Cimaruta

After an incident at school incenses her to the point of allowing one of her little ‘abilities’ to slip out and be observed, Persephane’s life becomes a cascade of weird events. A fairy pleads for her help and a large bear tells her that her destiny is about to start unfolding, beginning with her first experience with the Time-Linx!

It’s after this that she and her familiar Benson (a VERY cheeky dragonfly) meet Thaddeus, a wizard and his sidekick P-C (a ‘not so brave’ dragon). These four get the shock of their lives, when it’s revealed that their actual destiny together includes a dark, dangerous and on the surface – nearly impossible task.

They must stop the cold and evil Melanthios from collecting nine magical objects and becoming the “All Powerful One” which would allow her and her demonic minions to rule our planet in darkness and Black Magic.

About the Author

It says on the back of the first book of The Persephane Pendrake Chronicles: “About Lady Ellen – Weaving and scribing of the eight remaining tomes continues in Lady Ellen’s remote witch’s hut…on her tiny piece of Ontario’s Cambrian Shield” …and indeed that’s where the series began. After more than three decades as an alternative health care practitioner, I finally managed to start devoting some serious time to my secret love–fantasy fiction. I’ve always loved fantasy, magic and mythical kingdoms.  We home-schooled our kids and lived on a 100 acre farm..which had about twenty-five acres in forest. We’d make up stories and adventures..lots of fairies, witches, wizards, etc. Now, all these years later, I’ve started on my nine-book, three trilogy magical series…The Persephane Pendrake Chronicles and have just re-published the first book “The Persephane Pendrake Chronicles-One-The Cimaruta.

Hope’s Daughter by Mel Cusick-Jones

Life should be simple for Cassie.

For the small population of Earth survivors who live on the Space Station Hope everything they do is planned and scheduled, down to the cyclical food menus, their roles in the station, even how many children they have.

Despite rigid controls directing her life, Cassie feels more out of synch than ever and worries she won’t find a place for herself within the station community. Perhaps that’s because she’s hearing things inside her head that can’t possibly be real. Or maybe it’s the regular elopements of her peers, heading off to a romantic future in the Married Quarter of the space station, whilst she’s never even been attracted to a boy – no matter how hard her best friend Ami pushes them at her. Then there are the odd questions her work placement partner Balik keeps raising. His questions are just as troubling for her as his distracting smiles and eyes that seem to see inside her.

As Cassie draws closer to Balik she finds that everything else in her life begins to shift. He tells her things that call into question the system they live within. She can’t believe he is right, but at the same time she finds it hard to deny the sincerity of his ideas. Could there be a connection between Cassie’s problems and Balik’s questions? The truth will drag them both to a terrifying and deadly conclusion beyond anything they could have imagined.

About the Author

After graduating from The University of Sheffield with an English Literature Masters in 2003, Melanie has been writing fiction – time permitting – ever since.

The Ambrosia Sequence (started in 2008) and The Elementals (begun in 2004) are both ongoing, extended projects each containing several novels, aimed primarily at young adults and hover somewhere in the middle of sci-fi, futuristic and fantasy genres. Hope’s Daughter, released in December 2011, is her debut novel and the first of The Ambrosia Sequence, with the sequel – Outlanders – due in 2012.

When she’s not writing Melanie enjoys the wet weather of the north of England with her dogs or disappearing into a book for a few hours (no surprise there then). Unfortunately, all too often the ‘day job’ gets in the way of the nicer things in life!

About the Author: Living in England, Surrey and about to break the 33-years old barrier.  I can honestly say that coming to terms with getting older is worse than puberty.  At 14 every extra hair was greeted with rapturous applause and a desire to show it off at school.  Every time a small breeze blew I would worry that it was going to blow away.

These days whenever I spot a new nasal hair I can hear it laughing at me.  I even have to make use of electronic devices to prune it back.

A profile picture? I am too shy.  I might pluck up the courage later though.

About the Author

Jordan McKinney is that quintessential ’90s kid. You know, the kind of person who repeats ad nauseum how cartoons and the economy and just everything was better up until the year 2000. But with growing up in a small city just outside of Detroit, Michigan, there isn’t much to do but observe, and analyse. Maybe that’s why he grew up to study Sociology in college and then, in turn, used that knowledge to scrutinize subjects in popular culture against sociological and psychological concepts in his writing. Maybe he likes to eat burgers and uses writing to pay for his habit. Who knows anything, but the fact that  he’s a writer who tries too hard to be funny. But, no, seriously, Jordan McKinney became a writer because books are such an important–or used to be an important–part of life. They pass on information, and create worlds that you thought could not exist. And to speak on life from a young Black kid’s perspective is Jordan’s goal.

Blue Sky Days by Marie Landry

A year after graduating from high school, nineteen-year-old Emma Ward feels lost. She has spent most of her life trying to please her frigid, miserable mother – studying hard, getting good grades, avoiding the whole teenage rebellion thing – and now she feels she has no identity beyond that. Because she spent so many years working hard and planning every moment of her life, she doesn’t have any friends, has never had a boyfriend, and basically doesn’t know who she is or what she really wants from life. Working two part-time jobs to save money for college hasn’t helped her make decisions about her future, so she decides it’s time for a change. She leaves home to live with her free-spirited, slightly eccentric Aunt Daisy in a small town that makes Emma feel like she’s stepped back in time.

When Emma meets Nicholas Shaw, everything changes – he’s unlike anyone she’s ever met before, the kind of man she didn’t even know existed in the 21st century. Carefree and spirited like Daisy, Nicholas teaches Emma to appreciate life, the beauty around her, and to just let go and live. Between Daisy and Nicholas, Emma feels like she belongs somewhere for the first time in her life, and realizes that you don’t always need a plan – sometimes life steers you where you’re meant to be.

Life is wonderful, an endless string of blue sky days, until Nicholas is diagnosed with cancer, and life changes once again for Emma in ways she never thought possible. Now it’s time for her to help Nicholas the way he’s helped her. Emma will have to use her new-found strength, and discover along the way if love really is enough to get you through.
