Shepherd’s Moon by Stacy Mantle

Fate hasn’t exactly been kind to twenty-year-old Alexandra. Unless you count the fact that she can communicate with animals, the only piece of luck she’s ever had was being rescued by a werewolf and landing in a forever home with an eccentric couple and their unusual pack of animals. It’s taken twelve years to earn the official title of Shepherd but she’s now mostly trained, fairly effective, and the first female in over two centuries to hold the position as protector of animals.

All animals…

The Territorial Council isn’t thrilled with her new title of Shepherd, but they don’t have any more control over the appointment than they have over her. All they can really do is wait for her to screw something up – which Alex is determined not to do.

Everything changes when a chance encounter with a genetically modified Shifter leaves Alex shaken and initiates a quest to locate its maker. In a desperate bid to save her pack, Alex must infiltrate the Parallax Corporation – an international organization with their hands in everything from biomedical engineering to publishing. They have now expanded their efforts to include terrorism and are attempting to breed the perfect weapon. Despite years of training and enough money from her live-in pack of misfits to finance a small country, Alex finds herself woefully unprepared to tackle the new threat.

To make matters worse, Alex must work with a mysterious man who’s been trying to kill her since the day they met. Together with her pack, Alex must learn how to stop the biological cloning and find those responsible for the plan before it really does become a global threat.

 Author Interview

Where do you find your inspiration?  I think that my inspiration can mostly be attributed to my pets. I love watching the way they interact with one another, and I do my best to incorporate their actions and movements into my writing.  The more I watch them and write about them, the more I see similarities between people and animals. From there, it’s not too big of a jump to believe in were-creatures.

What is your favourite aspect of Shepherd’s Moon? I think that my novel is unique in that I include many types of animals as Shifters.  I’ve always felt that if werewolves exist in fiction, why can’t were-jaguars and were-cats and horse-shifters also exist? And if they existed, wouldn’t they have the same idiosyncrasies as their human counterparts? I like that Shepherd’s Moon explores those questions.

Who is your favourite character from Shepherd’s Moon and why? That’s a tough one because I love all of them for being so individual. I think most people would expect me to say that Alex is my favorite character, but in fact, I have a love/hate relationship with her. I suppose I could safely say that Brock is one of my favourites – he’s the alpha wolf in the household and is always so controlled and self-assured. I think if I could choose one character to write an entire book about, he would be my go-to guy.

What are you working on now?  I’m currently in the middle of finalizing book two of the Shepherds series. The working title is “Blood of the Shepherd” and it takes place in Seattle, WA. In addition to that, I’m still freelancing for several curriculum development groups, and doing my best to keep PetsWeekly regularly updated.

What do you love about most about writing? Physically, I love being able to work from home.  Emotionally, I love having control over my world (mostly). Mentally, I love exploring the new hobbies and personalities that each new character brings into the world.  Mostly I just love that I can begin my day with an empty page, and by evening, create an entire new world with rules and characters that have never before existed. Not too many people can say that about their lives…

Our Monsters by Clinton D Harding

Yesterday Jon Graves believed living and going to high school in the military occupied town of Carpenter was a snooze-fest. That is until a routine fieldtrip to Carpenter’s science labs, when Jon and his friends uncover a military secret, the reason why the US Army brought their parents to Carpenter… to create a top secret, genetically engineered species of monsters.

Yeah… that’s right… MONSTERS!

Now Jon and his four friends have liberated and adopted five of the monsters, vowing to keep the five monsters hidden away from harm. These are not puppies and kitten, though. Keeping the monsters a secret turns into a difficult task when each one begins to develop amazing powers. And soon a betrayal from within the circle of friends will threaten to unravel the groups’ plans.

In order to keep the promise his friends made and prevent the Carpenter military from subjecting each to further inhuman experiments, Jon will need to bring his friends together for a rescue mission. Mysterious powers the teens begin to exhibit will offer aid but ultimately the group’s friendship will save the day. It’s just another chaotic day in high school… yeah, right!

 Author Interview

Where do you find your inspiration?

For me, ideas come from the what if’s? in life. What if as a kid I had a monster as a pet? From there a world grows to answer that question and from the world a story can be found. I also find my best inspiration when I allow my mind to drift, to wander into a calm idleness. A lot of cool ideas can be gleamed when you’re not trying so hard; just like to find your misplaced keys you sometimes have to stop thinking, sit down, and realize the keys have been in your right front pocket the entire time!

What is your favourite aspect of Our Monsters?

What I love about Our Monsters is how the characters come together to solve problems. They all are from different high school cliques, each has his or her own personality–which comes with distinct strengths and weakness–and yet to get through their trials they need lean on each other for support. When I worked at a movie theatre in high school, the staff was comprised of an eclectic group of people. Yet we all got a long. We all became friends. At the theatre, it didn’t matter if we were a jock, a straight-A nerd, a band geek… There was a job to be done and lots of fun to have while accomplishing it. The relationships at my old movie theatre inspired part of Our Monsters, forming the central theme of the book that I love so much. Friendship.

Who is your favourite character from Our Monsters and why?

Of the characters in Our Monsters I would have to say Jon is my favourite. Within Jon there is so much raw emotion to explore. He doesn’t know his place in the world, which leads him to do stupid stuff because of impulse decisions of the heart, it makes him vulnerable and fun to write. What’s better is his good nature and humour, both of which draw people to him. When the chips are down Jon tends to crack wise, another fun aspect to the character. Coming up with new lines for Jon is the fun part and I’m always looking for a way for Jon to throw other people off balance. This is his gift and curse, because his tongue gets him into a lot of trouble. Jon is also fiercely loyal and will bend over backwards for the people he cares for and for what he believes in. Courage and sacrifice is what measures heroes and I want Jon to find his way to the hero he’s meant to be.

What are you working on now?

Currently I am in the middle of writing the sequel to Our Monsters. The title will be Bad Monsters and it is tentatively scheduled for a late 2012 release. Watch my site for more details and maybe some short fiction during the summer and fall months leading up to the release!

What do you love about most about writing?

Writing is an adventure. I never know where the story is going to go. No matter how much of a plot I have laid out, there is always some roadside attraction that will steer me away so I can find some new oddity about a character or a twist in the plot I could never have planned. Spontaneity is sometimes the best master!

About the Author

Clinton grew up in Southern California, where the sun shines all day and where most kids spend their days outdoors skinning knees and browning their flesh. He spent those same days inside, reading comics, books, and dreaming of fantasy worlds. These days he not only dreams but he creates and writes about those same worlds. In college Clinton found himself in the dregs of a business school, studying accounting. Sneaking English and philosophy courses into his schedule were the only things that kept him sane! As a result, he spent way more than four years getting a well-rounded degree. Adult books and books for kids, Clinton reads it all these days. He still enjoys traditional American comics and manga/anime from Asia, but when not writing he can also be found immersing himself in video games.

Clinton today still resides in Southern California with his wife, Kathy and their two Scottish terriers, Mac and Bonni (wheaten and black).

Devi knows she shouldn’t trust the new employee at her favorite used bookstore. Sure, he’s funny, smart and hands down the sexiest guy she’s ever met, but something dark lurks behind his unassuming smile and sinful green eyes.

Still, a girl can’t always afford to be picky. When an angel abducts your twin brother it should come as no surprise that the one person who can help you get him back is a demon–and only if you’re willing to pay his price.

Enchantment by Charlotte Abel

Channie is a lovable teenage mage that lives a simple but magical life with her clannish community deep in the Ozark Mountains. She’s blessed with the ability to enchant those around her, charming not only her family and friends, but any boy with a pulse that doesn’t know how to shield himself against her magic.

When her father’s gambling addiction earns the wrath of a powerful mage, the family is forced to flee for their lives. They escape to the suburbs of Colorado hoping to hide amongst Magically Disabled people (like you and me).

Channie’s parents are overwhelmed by the modern world and panic when they catch her flirting with a group of “dirty-minded, non-magical city-boys.” They strip away her power of enchantment and replace it with a chastity curse that automatically zaps any boy foolish, or courageous, enough to pursue her.

Josh Abrim — a BMX racer with a killer smile, Olympic dreams, and dangerous secrets of his own — is just that kind of boy. When he and Channie realize their interest in each other is more than just friendship, she turns to dark and forbidden magic, determined to break the curse keeping them apart. Her inexperience makes matters infinitely worse and unleashes a malevolent force with the power to destroy everything they love … including each other.

Author Interview

Where do you find your inspiration?  From my family, friends and the ‘voices in my head’. I created Channie and Josh in a writer’s workshop and fell in love with them. We all agreed they deserved a longer life than what a short story could give them.

What is your favourite aspect of Enchantment?    Channie and Josh’s evolving relationship — the way they grow from two selfish teens trying to satisfy their lust to a loving couple willing to sacrifice everything, even their lives, for the other.

Who is your favourite character from Enchantment and why?  I’ve sort of fallen in love with Hunter Feenie. He didn’t even exist in the first draft of ENCHANTMENT but I needed a better opening scene so readers would realize right away they were reading a paranormal romance. I needed a boy, and it couldn’t be Josh … so Hunter was born. He has a way of slipping into your heart with his simple country charm when you least expect it.

What are you working on now?    I’m trying to publish the 3rd book in The Channie Series trilogy during the Summer of 2012. And, I might even surprise my fans with the first book of my new series this Spring. It is set in the remote Sawatch Mountain wilderness of Colorado and is very different from Enchantment. But, the common theme in all my books is that “True love will prevail” and this is no exception.

What do you love about most about writing?      Discovering the story and getting to know the characters.

I used to write “by the seat of the pants” and just let the story and characters lead me where ever they wanted. Fun, but horribly inefficient. It requires multiple drafts to take a meandering plot and force it into a meaningful story.

I was afraid that outlining would kill that creative flow, but it didn’t. It only moved it to a different part of the process. I can explore optional plot lines and subplots in an outline easier than I can in the middle of a 100,000 word novel.

Just Finished…Bites by Ninfa Hayes

Reviewed by Mel – 4.5*

I’ve not read any ‘vampire books’ for a while now. Before I started Bites (last night at midnight, finished first thing this morning!) I was thinking to myself “I don’t really do vampire stories” but that’s not true: I read most of Ann Rice’s books, Twilight Saga, all the True Bloods (until about book ten when they got dull), Bram Stoker, dabbled in YA vampires with Blue Bloods, the first House of Night and a couple of not-so-good indie onesand I liked most of them: some I loved, some not so much…and that doesn’t stop at books because I was a Buffy fan (not so much Angel) and have been loving the True Blood TV series. Perhaps I just go through phases of reading and then find myself a little under-awed with a genre after a while?

Anyway, I realised, I do “do vampire stories” – it’s just that I like ones that are written well, have some depth, interesting and/or original ideas… And Bites does 🙂

Bites is actually a novella of two short stories: Demonica and Last of the Blood – one is a more traditional vampire story, the other a semi-demon crossover with a smattering of angelic backstory which I was hooked on by the end of the first page… Both stories read well and quickly – as short stories there is a limited amount of world building (obviously!) but they introduce interesting characters and concepts.

In Bites, Damon is a thoughtful vampire – with shades of Louis, perhaps Angel, Edward and Bill about him – in how he views the existence he has and vampire/human relationships. I liked the POV story-telling from his side and found his rather poetic voice carried me through his story with interest. The resolution the issues of the story fits perfectly with his character. Catherine also really interested me – I think her experiences and perspective would offer a good story.

Demonica was my favourite of the two stories – I like the origins story aspects of the beginning and found myself drawn in very quickly. Again – good characters, interesting ideas and I think a good basis for longer novels.

Overall, I think this is a good debut for a new writer, showcasing her skills for writing interesting characters in familiar situations for the genre, but still doing something original with them. Definitely recommended 🙂

Just Finished…Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini

I bought this ages ago on a recommendation and kind of forgot about it, so I started it last week without reading the blurb.

This is the first ‘mythology’ based YA I’ve read – not sure if there’s loads of them around or not – and it was great. I loved the detail of the writing – the slow development of the character relationships; the dynamics added by the recycling of mythological characters and stories. It is good enough to keep you guessing what the mysteries are and how they will unfold.

I think what I liked best about this was the depth of the world-building: the reflection of well-known myths and lesser known classic themes is woven so well into the world of the Scions and I think gave a wonderfully deep texture to the world the story is told in. Helen and Lucas are a lovely pairing – I felt they were quite realistic in their relationship – with all the obvious difficulties – I’ve definitely got a soft spot for Lucas and Hector (but then I always loved Hector in the Illiad).

Overall – really liked this: it’s intelligently written and works the mythology angles perfectly without being contrived or superficial. Can’t wait for the next book – if I could have got it at 2.00am this morning I probably would have – so that tells me how much I enjoyed this! 🙂

Rating: 5*

Blurb:

When shy, awkward Helen Hamilton sees Lucas Delos for the first time she thinks two things: the first, that he is the most ridiculously beautiful boy she has seen in her life; the second, that she wants to kill him with her bare hands. With an ancient curse making them loathe one another, Lucas and Helen have to keep their distance. But sometimes love is stronger than hate, and not even the gods themselves can prevent what will happen…
